Water is an important issue in the Southwest, and a great resource for recreation and play on a hot summer’s day. Campers will also have the opportunity play near many natural water sources and will practice purifying water to drink. We will learn where our water comes from and where it goes when we’re done. 9-12 year olds campers will have the opportunity to kayak for two days on flat water. This week will definitely be a cool time in hot weather!

Challenge Level:    
Kids and cameras in nature – a recipe for fun and stunning images! Campers will use their imagination to focus and capture their unique perspectives of the natural world. With their own digital camera or camera phone daily themes will challenge campers to capture something new each day. Topics covered will include framing, composition, lighting, people, and breaking all the rules! Campers will submit 1-2 favorite photos for an end of week photo show.

Bikes & Boats! Mountain Biking & Kayaking Combo

Ages: 9-13
Dates: June 18-22

Overnight: Wednesday at Abiquiu Lake
Challenge Level:    
This new action-packed camp for 9-13 year olds offers equal time on mountain bikes and in kayaks. We will spend the first two days learning new mountain biking skills. Starting with the basics of proper braking, gearing and climbing, to practicing new skills such as cornering techniques, track stand, bunny hops, jumps and more. On Wednesday we will pack up for an overnight at Abiquiu Lake where we will kayak, swim and enjoy an evening under the stars!

Digging into the Past

Ages: 5-8 & 9-12

We will put on our detective hats this week to learn about the ancient people, cultures, and even dinosaurs of New Mexico. We will visit Bandelier to learn about the pueblo people, travel to Ghost Ranch to learn about dinosaurs, and find fossils at our very own Santa Fe Beaver Ponds. Locally, we’ll find natural clay to make our own pots and creatures to round out this awesome adventure into our fascinating past.

Plein Air Arts & Crafts

We will travel into the forest and back in time to gather materials and inspiration for our natural arts and crafts projects. Campers will spend time plein air painting and make paint from colors we find in nature. We will also dive into crafts using natural materials such as cattail, yucca and willow.

Let’s Grow!

This week campers will have a chance to learn some basic homesteading skills and get a glimpse into farm life. We will grow sprouts, make cheese and capture wild bacteria for sourdough bread. We will visit a farm with animals including goats, turkeys and chickens, and taste some fresh produce straight from the field! We will develop a greater appreciation for all that goes into making our food, and have lots of fun in the process!

The Edible Forest

Ages: 9-13

Challenge Level:    
Ever wondered what kinds of edible and medicinal plants live in our forests? This week we will learn what we can eat and spend time cooking and creating medicine from local, wild plants. We will search for huckleberries and make some hearty foods for the trail including pemmican and fruit leather. We will develop a deeper understanding of the gifts of nature and how to use them.
Campers in this group will also have the opportunity to join with Bikes and Boats to spend a day mountain biking and a day kayaking this week.

Bikes, Hikes & Boats!

Challenge Level:    
This new camp for 9-13 year olds will combine time on mountain bikes, in kayaks, and on foot learning about edible and medicinal plants in the forest. We will spend one day mountain biking, one day kayaking and two days in the forest hiking and learning about plant medicine. (This group will be combined with The Edible Forest camp.) There will not be a dull moment during this exciting week of learning and fun!
