2026 Summer Camp Field Instructor (Seeking Multiple Candidates)
The Role
Field Instructors are the heart of Mountain Kids! summer camp. We’re looking for motivated, reliable, kid-centered outdoor educators who can step into the field ready to lead — people who notice what needs doing and do it, who bring calm confidence in dynamic outdoor settings, and who genuinely love working with kids.
You’ll primarily work with one of our camper age groups: 5–7, 8–10, or 11–13 (placement based on experience/fit). This role also includes mentoring and modeling leadership for Counselors-in-Training (CITs), ages 14–17, helping them grow into strong assistants and emerging leaders.
What You’ll Do
As a Summer Camp Field Instructor, you will:
- Co-lead a new group of campers each week, building a supportive, close-knit community
- Create a safe, inclusive, encouraging environment where kids can thrive
- Plan and facilitate outdoor adventures and age-appropriate programming (often with a co-instructor)
- Manage daily routines and group needs: health, hydration, behavior support, transitions, and logistics
- Teach and model: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, resilience, and respect for the natural world
- Mentor CITs (14–17) by coaching skills like leadership, professionalism, group support, and positive role modeling
- Use strong judgment and risk management in outdoor settings
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and contribute to a strong staff culture
Who You Are
Ideal candidates are:
- Self-starters who take initiative, stay engaged, and follow through
- Upbeat, grounded, and adaptable — you can keep a positive tone even when things get messy, muddy, or unexpected
- Confident working outdoors in changing conditions and able to spot hazards
- Strong with group management and child-centered behavior support
- Collaborative team players who can also lead independently when needed
- Clear communicators with solid organization and logistics awareness
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Experience working with kids, especially in outdoor, camp, school, or youth program settings
- Comfort working with a specific age group: 5–7, 8–10, or 11–13
- Experience mentoring teens (or interest in coaching emerging leaders)
- Spanish language skills (a plus)
- Clean driving record; comfortable driving a 15-passenger van (see age requirement below)
Minimum Qualifications
- 18+ (must be 21+ to drive vans)
- Current Wilderness First Aid + CPR (or ability to obtain before camp)
- Ability to pass a background check
- Availability for staff training and the full summer season (see dates)
