Animal lovers rejoice! This week we will learn about the amazing animals that make New Mexico home. We will examine animal tracks and animal signs in nature. We will learn animal gaits and play games to practice them. We’ll look closely animal skulls and learn how animals adapt for their survival. We will practice the art of stalking by playing lots of sneaking and hiding games. We will also visit some domestic animals; milking and walking goats, harvesting chicken eggs and visiting with local turkeys. Gobble, gobble!

The Secret Language of Birds & Bugs

Ages: 5-8 & 9-12

Learning the secret language of birds opens up a whole new way of understanding our forests and what is happening around us. Amidst our adventures into nature, we will learn bird language, and listen and look for birds. We will learn about local species and what they eat. Of course, birds love to eat bugs, so we will capture bugs using pitfall traps, funnel traps, potato traps and finger traps, to view them up close. We will visit the Wildlife Center to see some local raptors and get a special tour of the Bug Museum by Wade Harrell, bug-collector extraordinaire! There will be lots of buggy and birdy fun for adventures of all ages!

Muddy Buddies!

Getting dirty has to be one of the greatest joys of childhood. This week we will learn about mud, clay and camouflage in a variety of ways. We’ll muck in the mud, create things with clay, and combine both art forms to camouflage ourselves in nature. We’ll become stealthy stalkers in sneaking and hiding games and be ready for bath time after this week of muddy fun!

Wonders of Water! with Kayaking

Ages: 5-8 & 9-12
Dates: August 6-10

Water is an important issue in the Southwest, and a great resource for recreation and play on a hot summer’s day. We will learn where our water comes from and where it goes. Campers will learn how to purify water to drink, and will have daily opportunities to explore and play in cool, watery locations. With the addition of kayaking for 9-12 year old campers this year, we will explore water from even more angles, paddling at Santa Cruz Lake. This week will definitely be a cool time in hot weather!

Four Day Backpacking Adventure

Ages: 11-14
Dates: July 30-August 3
Tuition: Mon-Fri, 575 plus tax
Overnights: 3 nights, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Challenge Level:    
This four-day backpacking trip is for kids who are ready to challenge themselves physically and mentally and enjoy the beauty, serenity and fun of being out in the wilderness. Campers will learn how to prepare and pack for a backpacking trip, the 6 W’s, map reading and Leave No Trace principles. On the trip, campers will practice leadership skills by taking on different jobs with a teammate including L.O.D. (Leader of the Day), cook team, tarp team, and water team. We will pass the time on the trail playing games and enjoy time by the fire singing and telling stories. This trip promises lasting memories and new friendships in the backcountry.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (C.I.T.) PROGRAM

Mountain Kids! C.I.T. program provides 13-16 year old youth leadership experience with younger campers (5-7 or 8-12).

C.I.T.s work from 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday.

C.I.T.s work alongside our staff to lead activities, help children and staff with a variety of tasks, navigate the natural world, promote safety, learn, play, and have fun!

C.I.T.s are asked to commit to a minimum of two consecutive weeks.

C.I.T.s are invited to participate in staff trainings and meetings, providing them with leadership training and additional behind the scenes experience in planning, problem solving and communication.

Successful applicants for this program are:

  • outdoor enthusiasts and interested in, or enjoy working with children
  • willing to take on some responsibility and take initiative
  • want to learn and have fun!

  • Once accepted, parent and C.I.T. complete Medical and Waiver Form.

Fees and Stipends:
First Year C.I.T.s: Training and transportation of C.I.T.s, fee of $195/week.
Second Year C.I.Ts: Training and transportation provided at no fee.
Third Year C.I.T.s: Paid stipend of $75 for each week worked (with job requirements met to our satisfaction).
Fourth Year C.I.T.s: At 16, C.I.T.s who have proven to be responsible and capable leaders may apply to become Junior counselors and will be paid an hourly wage.

Three-Day Backpacking Adventure!

Ages 9-13

Dates: June 10-14

Tuition: Mon-Thu $475 Mon-Fri $535 plus tax

Overnights: 2 nights, Monday and Tuesday

Challenge Level:    
This two-night, three-day backpacking trip will provide campers an opportunity to challenge themselves and enjoy the beauty, serenity and fun of being out in the wilderness. Campers will learn how to prepare and pack for a backpacking trip, the 6 W’s of preparing for any outdoor trip, map reading and Leave No Trace principles.
Campers will practice leadership skills by taking on different jobs with a teammate including L.O.D. (Leader of the Day), cook team, tarp team, and water team. We will pass the time on the trail playing games and enjoy time by the fire singing and telling stories. Summer memories are made in the backcountry that last forever!
We will meet on Sunday afternoon to get to know each other, check packs and divide up group gear. Our backpacking trip will be Monday-Wednesday. On Thursday we will provide a special opportunity to go kayaking with Steve Gibons, our fabulous kayaking guide.
