Mother-Daughter Backpacking

Ages: 9 and up

Join us for a memory-making mother-daughter backpacking trip.  Together you will learn what to pack, how to pack, how to fit your pack correctly, good backpacking food choices, trail games, and more. We will pack up Thursday evening, leaving Saturday morning for an overnight in the Manzanos. We will return Sunday afternoon after an invigorating, challenging and fun time together.

Wildside: Wilderness Skills & Adventures for Boys & Girls

Ages: 9-12
One Sunday monthly, 11 am-4pm

Wildside is a monthly skills building program which will run throughout the school year, culminating in an (optional) backpacking trip in June.
This is an empowering adventure for pre-adolescent girls and boys, providing them an opportunity to inquire, engage and challenge themselves in skills and arts that will serve them well and provide them with a deep sense of accomplishment.
Kids will learn the way of the bow, fire making skills, tracking, orienteering, plant medicine making, shelter building and natural crafts. As a group we will build strong trust and communication skills.
Adventure and play is a natural and essential part of learning outdoors, and will be incorporated into our days together in liberal doses.

Mountain Biking Tuesdays

Ages: 8-12
October 2 – 29, 2018. Five Tuesdays, 3:30-5:00
Tuition: 225 + tax
Challenge Level:    
Beginner and intermediate mountain bikers are invited to join us after school at La Tierra to learn riding skills, challenge themselves, and have fun!
Beginners will learn the basics: ready position, gearing and braking, climbing and descending, and trail safety and awareness.
Advanced riders will be introduced to more advanced skills such as: cornering, riding switchbacks, track stand, intro to jumping, climbing techniques, riding over logs and other obstacles.
Keeping a positive mindset, team work and fun are emphasized for all levels of riders.

Wildschool Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays

Ages: 5-11

Wildschool is a nature immersion program for children. Our days will be filled with nature awareness games, primitive skills, tracking, crafting, natural movement and story.
Listening to the wild within and all around them, the children will enliven their animal senses, tuning their creativity and awareness to outer rhythms and seasonal changes.
Program is led by Carmen Harris, a Waldorf-trained educator, naturalist and herbalist.

Mountain Girls! Mondays

Ages: 9-12
Mondays, 4-5:30pm
September 17 – December 3. 12 sessions.

We are thrilled to announce Mountain Girls!, a new program providing 9-12 year old girls an opportunity to build strength, confidence and fitness in nature through hiking, mountain biking, running, yoga and more.
We will meet weekly to ‘play’ outside together. Our main focus will be our day’s activity, but we will also allow time to talk about nutrition, friendships, and other pre-adolescent issues.
The program will be led by Katie Macaulay who is beyond excited to share this offering with girls in Santa Fe.  Our goal is to build confidence, strength, kindness, and a lifelong love of outdoor fitness.
Mountain Girls will also have an opportunity to join their Mountain Mamas for a Fall Backpacking Trip.
Pair Mountain Girls! With Wildside for Girls to provide your girls the ultimate in nature-connection through skill building and fitness!

Forts & Forests

Ages: 5-8 & 9-12

Challenge Level:    
Learn everything you have ever wanted to know about forts, survival shelters, forests and trees in this weeklong adventure of building forts and fairy houses. What is a debris hut and how it is different than a wicki-up? Why won’t a stick fort keep me warm and dry, and how can I make it so it will? We will learn about local trees and explore the many uses of trees in our daily lives and in wilderness survival. We will use trees for crafts, to make fairy houses, play Tree Tag, Meet-a-Tree and other favorite activities as part of this awesome week of tree loving fun!

Wilderness Skills

Ages: 5-8 & 9-12
Dates: June 4-8

Overnight: Wednesday for 9-12 year olds, +$70
Challenge Level:    
During this week we will explore survival basics: fire, water, shelters, cordage, and first aid. We will use local plants for a healing salve for our own mini-survival kits, and to make cordage. We will orient to the four directions and look for landmarks as we hike and explore wild places. We will learn map reading skills, modern and primitive fire making techniques (hand drill & bow drill) with an emphasis on safety and reverence for our forests. We will find and purify water using a variety of techniques for our own bottles. We will find time run and play, and time to sit quietly and enjoy the sounds of nature.
Older Campers (9-12) will build shelters to sleep in on a Wednesday night campout.

Fat Tire Skills & Thrills

Ages: 8-13
Dates: June 4-8

Challenge Level:    
Whether you are a beginner or an intermediate rider, grab your mountain bike and get tuned up for some riding adventures! Riders will learn tips for riding single track, trail etiquette, and riding smart. Beginners will focus in the basics of braking, gearing and body position, while intermediate riders will be introduced to cornering techniques, track stands, bunny hops, how to ride jumps and whoops, and more. We will ride at La Tierra where there is plenty of single-track and a great flow track full of whoop-de-doos and yehaws! If we get some really hot days, we will reward ourselves by heading to a cool, watery location for an afternoon.
