Program Policies
At Mountain Kids!, safety, respect, and clear communication are at the heart of everything we do. Our Program Policies explain how our programs operate, who they are designed for, and the safety and planning practices that guide our work. They are intended to support clear communication with families and help determine whether a Mountain Kids! program is the right fit for your child.
These policies apply to all Mountain Kids! programs, including:
- After-School Programs
- School Break Camps
- Adventure Days
- Summer Camp
Who Our Programs Are Designed For
Mountain Kids! programs are designed for children who can safely participate in group-based, outdoor learning environments.
Staff are skilled facilitators who support typical developmental behavior, social growth, and conflict resolution. To uphold high standards of safety and supervision, staff are unable to provide consistent one-on-one care.
Participants should be able to:
- Follow safety directions without physical intervention (e.g., remaining buckled in a moving vehicle)
- Listen to and follow staff instructions without compromising group safety
- Participate comfortably in group settings without constant redirection
If your child requires specialized care or continuous 1:1 support beyond what we can safely provide, Mountain Kids! may not be the right fit. Families are encouraged to reach out with questions to determine whether a program is a good match.
Safety, Risk Management & Planning
Mountain Kids! has been entrusted with the care and education of participants during programming. Our highest priorities are the physical and emotional safety of all participants and staff.
Our risk management approach includes:
- Trained and qualified staff
- Clear safety expectations and protocols
- Careful planning and contingency preparation
- Transportation and emergency communication systems
- Ongoing review and improvement
Outdoor programs involve inherent risks. While we take extensive precautions, we cannot guarantee complete safety due to factors beyond our control, including weather, environmental conditions, and participant behavior.
Participant Health, Medical Care & First Aid
Families must provide advance notice of:
- Allergies
- Medical conditions
- Medications
- Other health concerns
All Mountain Kids! staff who work directly with children are trained in Wilderness First Aid and CPR and provide care within the scope of their training.
In the event of a serious medical emergency:
- 911 will be contacted immediately
- The Program Director will be notified
- Parents/guardians will be contacted as soon as possible
- Evacuation will be initiated if needed
Behavior & Participation Expectations
Mountain Kids! uses positive, developmentally appropriate behavior guidance focused on safety, respect, and shared responsibility.
If a participant repeatedly creates unsafe situations or is unable to meet group expectations:
- They may be asked to leave for the day
- In some cases, they may be dismissed from the program
Program fees are not refunded if a participant does not complete a session due to behavior-related dismissal.
For detailed information about behavior philosophy, participant expectations, and family responsibilities, please visit our Community Expectations & Commitments page.
Transportation
Safety is our top priority when transporting participants.
- Mountain Kids! uses 15-passenger Adventure Vans
- Drivers are over 21 years old, properly trained, screened, and maintain excellent driving records
- Seatbelts are required at all times
New Mexico Child Restraint Law:
Children ages 5–6 or weighing 60 pounds or less must use a booster seat. Families are responsible for providing booster seats when required.
Weather & Environmental Conditions
Mountain Kids! programs run rain or shine.
- Participants must arrive prepared with appropriate clothing and gear
- Staff teach children how to stay safe in changing conditions
- The Adventure Van or alternate locations may be used during severe weather
If conditions become unsafe:
- The Program Director may modify or end programming early
- Families will be notified promptly
Staff follow guidance from Forest Rangers, City Officials, and Emergency Services when applicable.
Questions & Communication
Families are encouraged to reach out with questions or concerns at any time.
